First Impressions

Let’s jump in and take a look at the first wireless DJ controller for DVS setups. Fresh out of the box, the first thing you’re going to notice about these MWM Phase Essential Wireless DJ controllers is that it’s made up of two different hardware devices.

The first is two audio remotes that are meant to be connected to the vinyl you plan to use with your turntable. The second device is the receiver, which acts as the remote’s charger.

One of the first things worth noting was the amount of battery life offered. While it won’t do anything “off-the-scale”, like continue for 18 or more hours, it’s been noted to last for around 10 hours.

And while I wasn’t able to note that in particular, I was able to determine that it could easily hit past 5 hours without breaking a sweat or having any issues.

As such, I’m pretty sure it can definitely hit its 10-hour time limit without too much issue.

The better option compared to “old school” vinyl and cartridge, Phase and its timecode technology is a more convenient and accessible method of DVS standard control. It makes a point of showing the betterment of removing the calibrating cartridges while also noting that cleaning control vinyl doesn’t mean Phase is perfect either.

Once it’s been properly set up, Phase can wirelessly transmit a near-perfect control signal that will appear as a clean and green circle in your DJ software preferences.

Because of its different features, Phase can produce a quality that standard vinyl and cartridges simply can’t due to them having to contend with signal noise.

This is also true when you consider the fact most booths and event stages have enough vibrations that, while can pose a problem for standard sound, has absolutely no bearing on Phase and its control signal.

Even when put in high-stress living and hectic environments, Phase feels largely like a classic DVS setup alongside the turntable while not using a vinyl cartridge or needle.

This means you can perform things like pitch bending, backspinning, and quality scratching all while using Phase and nothing else.

There’s a good chance you’ll forget you’re using the device at all, instead enjoying its tremendous usefulness

What We Do Not Like:

• Connectivity: While we didn’t experience any of these issues, it has been reported by others that there are connectivity problems as well as tracking issues or problems with batteries.
• RIP Needles: Will traditionalists not like the fact that needles are no longer needed? Kind of sad really.
