God of War: All God Fights, Ranked (2024)

In God of War, you’ll inevitably come face-to-face with one of the most famous or noble gods in Greek and Norse mythology. Sure. There are a variety of mythical monsters and titans to fight along your journey. However, the god fights are the main spectacle in which God of War shines the brightest.

Some gods are popular beings you’ve likely heard about way before playing God of War. They’re Hades, Zeus, Hercules, Poseidon, and Thor. Others are not-so-famous gods like Heimdall, Sisters of Fate, Magni and Modi, and more. Challenge either one to battle, and chances are you’re going to have to respawn a few more times than you’d like.

But which god fights etched themselves into gamers’ hearts the most? Which ones are the toughest, the most grueling, or the most thrilling god fights of all time? Let’s find out in today’s God of War: All God Fights article.

5. Zeus, The God of the Sky – God of War 3 (2010)

Zeus isn’t a stranger to many, even to those who may have still not played God of War (Erhm, what are you waiting for?) Since Zeus is Kratos’ father, well, technically, he’s the father of all gods and humans alike. Anyway, as “king of the gods,” you’d expect Zeus to demand respect from everyone, including Kratos.

Plus, Zeus’ ability to control lightning and the sky, ergo, the god of the Sky, should place him at an undeniable vantage point. Pair all these premise points together, and you come to expect Zeus and Kratos’ god fight to reek strongly of the most blood, toil, and suffering before finally narrowly escaping Zeus’ rage.

Perhaps it’s the high expectations gamers come in with? Zeus versus Kratos' fight doesn’t nearly live up to the expected standard. Sure. Splitting the fight into multiple phases helps to drag it out more, with each phase taking place in its unique setting and requiring different mechanics, adding a nice touch to it. That said, there aren’t really any surprising twists and turns. And dragging it out can only go so far.

4. Poseidon, The God of the Sea – God of War 3 (2010)

Although Kratos and Poseidon’s god fight takes place a little earlier in the game, it still feels like one of the most astounding boss battles of all time. Thanks to Poseidon’s powers, he’s able to master riding a water chariot and summoning a sea monster.

The only bad side to it is that Kratos easily pierces through the monster’s chest to reach Poseidon. It goes downhill from here as Kratos gouges the god’s eyes out. Still, Kratos versus Poseidon makes for some riveting cinema. It’s certainly a great way to build momentum for what’s to come.

3. Ares, The Original God of War – God of War (2005)

Next up is Ares, Zeus’ oldest child. This one is pretty memorable, thanks to the outstanding work put into the build-up. Kratos first goes through various quests to gain strength and power. It’s completely called for, too, given Ares is the original god of war that caused a “dynamo effect” that led to Kratos’ whole rageful mission.

It all starts with Ares’ deception that causes Kratos to kill his family. As a result, Kratos swore vengeance against Ares, Zeus, and Olympus, as a whole, that day. When he finally catches up with Ares, they get into one of the wildest god fights of the entire series. In essence, Kratos’ moves are unmatched by that of Ares.

Ares’ heavy-hitting, fast attacks are practically unblockable. So, all Kratos can do is dodge them as quickly as he can. Ares isn't afraid to play dirty. He puts Kratos through some sort of psychological torture to protect his already dead family against copies of himself. Then, Kratos’ blades of chaos are taken away from him. So, he needs to get used to a new weapon. In the end, it takes Kratos all to defeat Ares and take away his title of “god of war.”

2. Hades, The God of the Underworld – God of War 3 (2010)

Moving on to the underworld, Kratos’ god fight against Hades remains one of the most memorable ones in God of War 3. Especially since it took place in a completely different setting than we're used to. A gloomy one that gives you the creeps from the moment you walk through Hades' gates.

Fighting Hades, god of the dead, torturer of souls, and hell’s guardian comes at a price. When Kratos wins, it means Hades loses its guardian and souls flee into the land of the living to wreak havoc on Greece. Nevertheless, it’s one of the most challenging god fights.

Hades has long-range claws that are unmatched by Kratos’ short-range attacks. Plus, he can summon his multiple waves of minions every now and then to help kill Kratos. Eventually, Kratos uses Hades’ own weapon against him and rips his soul out.

1. Thor, The God of Thunder – God of War: Ragnarok (2022)

Thor is one of the most recent god fights. Thor, the god of thunder, has a bone to pick with you. He seeks revenge for killing his sons. Kratos, on the other hand, is on an illuminating journey to give up his old ways of vengeance. But Thor makes it, so Kratos’ destructive days aren’t over, and a spectacular god fight ensues between them.

While Thor wields the deadly Mjolnir and has left bloodshed in his wake, including the genocide against the Jotun for his father, Odin, Kratos, too, has more than a few tricks up his sleeve. Combine the two’s ambitious track records, and you have yourself a true clash of the gods. This one exudes rivalry, a bloody grudge, and a lightning-filled, most thrilling arena of all time.
