London Transport Museum announces new London Underground S Stock train models

London Transport Museum has announced a new motorised 1:76 (OO) scale S Stock model London Underground train made exclusively for the Museum by Bachmann Europe plc. The motorised set, comprising four cars, including two driving cars, will be available in September 2015 and can be pre-ordered from Saturday 30 May 2015. The first 250 customers to pre-order will receive a special S Stock certificate.

This is the first time a highly detailed ‘ready to run’ London Underground model train has been produced and additional un-motorised individual cars can be purchased to authentically complete either S7 or S8 train formations.

The models are based on the S Stock serving the Metropolitan line on the Underground network and shows Aldgate as the destination. The livery is based on the London Underground approved livery specification as of September 2014.

The four car S Stock model train set costs £280.00; up to 4 individual carriages can be purchased for £39.99 per car.

This event is exclusive to online pre-order customers only and along with being part of this private trip, customers will also collect their orders prior to travelling on the train. Details of the special train timetable and collection arrangements will be published online in June 2015. Online pre-order customers that are unable to, or decline to attend the Moorgate event will have their orders dispatched from Tuesday 29th September.

The S Stock model

Each driving car is motorised with an advance low-line system to make them invisible internally. The two motorised cars will be sufficient to haul a full S8 train on a model railway layout.

Proceeds from the sales of the S Stock model go towards supporting London Transport Museum’s work as a charity to help preserve, display and promote heritage vehicles and its world class collection of 20th century graphic art.

The S Stock on London Underground

London Underground is replacing all sub surface trains on the Metropolitan, Circle, Hammersmith & City and District lines with the new S Stock trains. Designed and built by Bombardier at their factory in Derby, the trains feature the latest technology with air conditioning and ‘walk through’ carriages, and are designed for maximum passenger capacity and comfort.

The new trains have already replaced the 1960/62 A Stock on the Metropolitan line, the 1969/77 C Stock on the Circle line, Hammersmith & City line, and the Edgware Road to Wimbledon branch of the District line, and are now replacing the 1980 D Stock trains on the rest of the District line.

There are two types of S Stock train. The S8 car version is used exclusively on the Metropolitan line and features more seats for the line’s longer distance services; the S7 car version is used for all other sub surface lines – which has fewer seats arranged longitudinally.

S Stock trains first appeared in London in 2009 when the first pre-production S8 Stock train was delivered to Neasden Depot and began testing on the Metropolitan line in December. S8 Stock trains entered passenger service on the Metropolitan line in July 2010. By mid-2012 all trains in service on the Metropolitan line were S8 Stock.

The first S7 Stock train arrived in London in June 2012 and began passenger service on the Hammersmith & City line between Hammersmith and Moorgate a month later. S7 trains now operate on all Hammersmith & City and Circle line services. S7 trains are now entering service on the District line and all are expected to be in service by 2016.

The S Stock has been delivered from Bombardier's Litchurch Lane works in Derby, the S Stock has been delivered by rail frequently topped and tailed by pairs of Class 20s and barrier wagons and will make for an exciting addition to contemporary mainline layouts in addition to any modern underground layout.
